Exciting projects are our motivation.

Our specialist expertise, our China-specific know-how and our open knowledge culture enable us identify upcoming challenges for the automotive industry and come up with concrete recommendations for action. Close interaction with our main office in Wolfsburg helps with knowledge transfer and enables us to maintain strong links with decision makers in Germany.

Examples of Projects

  • Fleet Fuel Consumption

    Challenge

As in the EU and USA, the Chinese government has also defined targets for a reduction in car fuel consumption. Rather than on the reduction of CO2 emissions, however, the focus in China is on reducing the amount of fuel that needs to be imported as oil to cover the requirements of growing numbers of vehicles.

    Approach

On the one side, Volkswagen Consulting was commissioned by the CTO to assess ways of reducing fuel consumption in locally manufactured vehicles, both from the technical and economic perspectives, and to come up with scenarios of how targets could be reached. In addition, we were also commissioned by the Managing Director of the import company to identify complementary effects from an adjustment of the product portfolio. A special challenge in defining a target scenario was taking account of local factors with regard to legislation, customer behaviour and market trends.

    Results and impact

The resulting proposals were discussed at a one-day Board meeting and subsequently approved. Volkswagen Consulting continued to be involved in the implementation of the measures, for example in planning the launch of low-consumption electric vehicles.

  • Operative Excellence: Launch planning for New Energy Vehicle

    Challenge

In 2014, the VOLKSWAGEN brand is introducing its first battery electric vehicle in China. This milestone product will help VOLKSWAGEN Group prepare for the era of the new energy vehicle. Meanwhile, the launch of an innovative NEV creates challenges in the infrastructure set-up, dealer readiness and customer service. Volkswagen Consulting was asked to create and pilot the vehicle launch plan.

    Approach

In discussions with more than 10 different business units within Volkswagen Group China, we adapted the regular product launch plan to NEV-specific requirements. Interdependencies between the stakeholders were analysed in depth. Responsibilities and timelines were aligned and the initial launch team formed.

    Results and impact

Launch plan and team set-up helped the client to successfully launch the first NEV on the Chinese market. Critical issues were addressed and solutions implemented, e.g. in the areas of charging standards, dealer selection and training.
